[She sets a small box onto the table with the Retrospec logo on the side. It's already been opened, and reaching in, she pulls out a pocket watch, handsome and well-made in appearance, if a bit beat up looking. Either way, it's much too big for her small hands.]
It meant I was at home when this got delivered to me.
[ He frowns a little, expression definitely concerned as she places the box onto the table, lowering the menu for a moment to hold out his hands for the pocketwatch. It's certainly well-made, he could at least tell that much. And it looked like it was well-loved as well, judging by the wear.
There a few more moments where he examines the watch, before he sets it down - and his face isn't bright red, but there's definitely some signs that he's a little flustered by it. ]
I'm. Are you sure? If this came from Retrospec, it must've meant something to you before.
[All of the worries that it's too soon in their relationship to give him a gift like this, that he doesn't need a pocket watch, that it's an old pocket watch in the first place, why would he want it-- it all evaporates into thin air at his answer.
Really, she should stop second-guessing herself when it comes to him...and just start expressing herself the way she wants to. He's told her before, he'll tell her if he feels uncomfortable.
So Minako offers him a soft smile, no longer holding back.]
It belonged to someone else, actually. He'd lost it, and the other Minako gave it back to him after she found it. [She reaches out hold the pocket watch in her hands again, fingers skimming over the casing.] She wanted to make him happy by returning it to him. She made a promise to him that she would watch over all of her friends with him, too.
[Pocket watch cupped between her palms, she holds it out to him again.]
So since this one is mine to give away, I want to give it to you. An omamori. A good luck charm for anything that comes your way.
[ He trails off, not exactly sure where to go from here. Not that he doesn't appreciate it or understand the implications, he's just surprised at how candid she is about her feelings. It's honestly kind of refreshing. ]
Thank you. [ He takes it gently, blinking a few times before he tucks it away in his jacket. ] I'll make sure to keep it on me.
[She grins as well, stifling more laughter behind her hand as their waiter stops at their table to ask for their order. With a playful look to David, she says:]
He's limiting my cake consumption, so I'll just have a hot chocolate with the orange chiffon cake.
[And that look from him means that she has no qualms with sticking out her tongue in retaliation. Spoilers, David, your girlfriend can be pretty childish.
Once the waiter leaves though, she schools her expression into something more mature, though there's a hint of a smile at the corners of her lips.]
One day I'll have to take you to an all-you-can-eat sweets buffet. Then I'll be able to eat all the cake I want.
Just one, if it's still open for business since the last time I looked. I've never actually been there before. [A pout.] I'm supposed to stick to my diet for volleyball.
[ ... dammit she's cute doing that. David reaches across the table to gently grip her hand while he tries to figure out a topic to fill the silence until their cake and drinks arrive. ]
[Luckily for him, she never runs out of things to talk about. She smiles at him over their joined hands.]
What about you? If we go to a place I want to go to, then we should go somewhere you want to go to after that. Or before that, I guess, since we have games scheduled well into November.
[She hums as she lets his hand go, leaning back for the waiter.]
I'm still planning on teaching you cooking, but what else could there be...sports? You're so athletic already. [She takes the whipped cream from her chiffon cake and plops it into her hot chocolate.] Rock climbing, go-kart racing, hiking...
Now would be one of the best seasons to start. All the fall colors are gorgeous right now.
[A laugh.] And hey, if you ever want that experience again? [She waves to herself.] Your girlfriend is still in college! We can take a walk around campus whenever you want.
True - and it'd be nice to enjoy it instead of running around all over the place.
[ He lets out his own chuckle before finally eating, smiling around the fork while it's still in his mouth before he starts to chew. ]
Oh man, that's ... definitely tempting. Haven't been back to my old alma mater in a while. Or at least long enough for an actual visit. I never did ask you what your major is, though.
It used to be a Criminology and Psychology double major. [She frowns into her hot chocolate for a moment.] I really wanted to be a policewoman for some time. But then...I don't know. Recently I realized I'm better suited for something else. So now I'm starting my first Management classes as a junior.
Huh. [ That actually does get him to laugh once he's swallowed. ]
I mean, switching majors isn't that unusual honestly, I'm just more amused because if you stuck with it, you'd share majors with me. I went for Criminology, myself.
[She goes quiet for a moment, fingers running along the rim of her cup.]
I've always wanted to help and protect people. When I went into Criminology, it was to prepare for when I'd eventually go back to Japan and become a policewoman in my home city.
But after everything with Retrospec...after that month of going through Ryoji's death and revival? I realized that protecting people and helping them can be vastly different things. [A wry smile.] I could never be a good policewoman, the way I want to protect people. I'd run through so much red tape. So I decided that I would focus on what I've loved all along, and keep doing my work at ReVA instead. My father, Lucian, suggested I go into Management for that.
Makes sense. That was kind of a similar train of thought I had.
[ He frowns a little as he continues to listen, nodding slowly. Honestly a lot of what she was saying resonated with him, especially with everything going on lately. ]
Yeah, I can see that. I don't know if I'd actually go for a police job now that I've done this for a few years either. I was prepared for the red tape starting off, but protecting one person and trying to keep him safe under any circumstance gives you a hell of a lot more freedom than most of the bureaucratic bullshit you'd normally deal with on the force.
[ He snorts. ]
And even beyond that, as long as you love what you're doing, it helps. A lot. I might gripe about Yoon-sung being a pain in the ass but I don't regret my decision accepting the position.
