Character History:
CANON PERSONALITY: Prickly even on his best days, Tae-won generally doesn't have much love for most of humanity. Partially because of his inhuman status, partially because he's seen a lot of bad that humans have done over the last couple centuries. Really, for the most part he's just Done with humanity and would rather be left alone - if it weren't for the fact of some of his old comrades asking him to come back to the fight, and maybe a little bit because while he's seen some shit, he also knows that there is at least some good in the world.
Not that he'd admit the latter outright. The former, however, he gives plenty of complaints to his squadmates about whether they like it or not.
Despite the fact that he generally finds most of humanity irritating at best, he does still follow human law when he's among them, if only because he would rather not reveal his true nature right away, as well as that hidden (or not-so-hidden, depending on who you ask) part of him that believes that there might be something more to humanity after all. He understands the potential implications of revealing what he is to the masses, and prefers to be a bit of a loner as a result, distant at best. He also hates manipulations, especially by magical means. He’s dealt enough with it during his time fighting the Black School previously, and with the knowledge of what they have done to others like him.
Despite what can be described as a bad attitude and distrust toward some (most) people, Tae-won actually isn't a terrible person, and has a surprising honorable streak to him. He chooses jobs that lean toward trying to restore the natural balance, and despite his aggressive nature during work, does have a sense of mercy and a bit of a soft spot for kids and animals both. He understands that sometimes fighting for the greater good isn't going to be easy, but he will do what he can to make things right. He's incredibly competitive, however, especially if he finds his opponent to be a worthy rival (see: his weird rivalmance with Nithal).
Once again outside of his work, he's mostly a loner, but has gained some people he considers to be comrades, maybe friends. Generally, he does prefer non-humans due to his extended lifespan, feeling that alongside the fact that humanity is generally ridiculous and not really worth his time, he has a better chance of fully getting to know someone if they're of an inhuman nature. But because of this, if someone does end up piquing his interest, he is an incredibly loyal friend to them and will do everything in his power to make sure they don't get hurt. His temper is incredible, and while a bit volatile at times, is much better about keeping it under control under most circumstances than he used to be.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: As a Dragonkin, Tae-won can only partially shift to a more monstrous form - generally to grow talon-like claws on the ends of his fingers, sharp fangs, and scales to help protect himself. The tell-tale sign of a shift is that his irises turn to a yellow-orange color alongside the other physical changes. Despite not being a full dragon, his scales and claws are very durable, able to act as armor and are heat-and-cold resistant, leaning more toward the former due to his primary element being fire. He is currently too young to shift wings, and it will be at least another century or so until he can start shifting more toward a full monstrous form.
As a Dragonkin, however, he has increased strength, speed, and endurance, along with a slight healing factor as well as pyrokinesis. Dragonfire on principle runs hotter than regular fire, and does not burn those of draconic blood.
Due to his experiences, he’s an incredibly competent warrior. He doesn’t study any particular martial art, but knows enough on when and where to hit to cause damage, never mind being physically strong enough to rip someone apart using his draconic strength and claws. While he prefers physical confrontations and using melee weapons, he does have some basic proficiency in handling firearms, mostly handguns.
World History:
- Tae-won comes from a world where there has been ongoing underground wars between supernatural factions for centuries, sometimes brought to the mainstream public’s attention, sometimes not.
- After the last major war that was spurred on by the factions themselves and not by human hands, there has been a mutual agreement between the groups to stay out of each others’ business and try to keep a balance, seeing that tipping the scales too far in one direction or the other has brought nothing but trouble.
- Some of the descendants of those that had been involved in these wars are still active in mainstream society today, and are generally known to the public as “empowered individuals” - even though some of them are in fact some of those same individuals who had fought in the previous wars. (Tae-won himself is technically in this category.)
- However, as of late and thanks to a conflict known as the Kresoveer Rebellion bringing Empowered Individuals back to the forefront, there has been a tip in the balance. This has emboldened some groups into action again after being dormant for years, and as a result, more people with abilities have been recruited in order to fight.
- The main instigator of these recent conflicts has been the Black School, an underground (literally) mage college that unfortunately has been rotting from the inside, kidnapping and brainwashing potential students, killing other supernaturals to use their body parts as components, all in the name of “vanquishing the darkness”.
Character History:
- Tae-won has been a part of these wars for over three hundred years, generally as a free agent mercenary, though he has a reputation of choosing jobs that fit his own personal criteria. Unlike most other Dragonkin, while he does value his privacy, he has not completely cut himself off from society (despite his grumbling that it would be for the best).
- Most Dragonkin live in their own secluded areas away from humans due to multiple reasons, including not wanting to deal with humans being unnecessarily scared of them revealing their true forms and being literally hunted by those within the magical communities due to their inhuman nature. (Even if Dragonkin aren’t full dragons, their claws, fangs, and scales are still considered powerful magical components.)
- Almost two hundred years prior to the present day, Tae-won had met with two phoenixes who were enforcers for the Council, a shadow group that was trying to set the balance straight. Intrigued by the brothers, he ended up becoming a rival of the older sibling, Nithal. The two would become notorious for fighting each other, to the point where they would go out of their ways to find reasons to fight.
- During his time fighting alongside and against the two phoenixes (it wavered depending on how he felt about the Council’s particular reason for sending the two out on missions), he had also befriended an elder vampire that went by the name of Tarr (real name: Cha Ki-moon) - and the few times that all four of them were brought together under a common cause were considered to be some of the most fun times of Tae-won’s life (not that he’d really admit it to anyone but them).
- Tae-won wouldn’t admit it to himself, but he also felt something more for Nithal, though he never wanted to admit it for fear of not only rejection, but also losing one of the few people that he felt he truly respected.
- Unfortunately, he couldn’t spit it out before Nithal was tried and sealed away another century after they had all met due to his involvement in a raid that ended with the deaths of members of the Black School and some of his and Amadi’s (his brother) nestmates - trying to protect the latter from the former.
- Fast-forward to the present day - Tae-won is still working some mercenary jobs on the side, when he’s informed of Nithal’s unsealing and assistance during the Kresoveer Rebellion. It’s not too long afterward that he finds out that NIthal had passed, and that he had accidentally merged his soul with that of a human pyrokinetic soldier’s in an attempt to save her life. At first, he was furious, especially when he had confronted her the first time after the merger had happened and felt Nithal’s presence inside her. It wasn’t until months later when Amadi had gathered allies to create a squadron that they would meet up again, alongside Ki-moon, his mage partner, and others in order to fight the recent surge of kidnappings and torture that the Black School was responsible for.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: David Song
AU AGE: 25
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Completely human, obviously; no abilities to shift eye color, show scales, fangs or claws, breathe fire/use pyrokinesis. Has a tattoo on his upper back between the shoulderblades (it’s going to be a dragon for maximum cringe when he starts getting echoes - i love my characters, clearly) that he will be getting in-game. His hair color is also dyed red/auburn (it’s brown naturally), whereas it’s naturally that color in his original version (his hair color reflects his scale colors), and his eye color is very firmly dark brown.

AU HISTORY: David was born to Korean-American parents while his father was stationed overseas. He grew up moving around a lot, but ultimately didn’t mind, thinking it was kind of cool to be able to visit all sorts of different places that he had previously read about in textbooks during school. Really, the only thing that bothered him was having to try and keep up with people that he had made friends with over the years - until his father’s tour was up and they moved back to the United States when David was in high school.
After graduation, he had been accepted to Recolle University, eventually choosing to pursue a major in criminology. He wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to do with that particular degree, but it was something that had always fascinated him ever since he was younger. After going to Recolle University for a year or two (and switching majors at least once or twice, as you do) - he realized the reasoning why he wanted to study criminology: he wanted to be able to understand why criminals did what they did, and as a result - prevent them from harming others. His major ambition afterward was to eventually get in with law enforcement, perhaps as a detective. At first, he viewed the offer to be on a security team as a “foot in the door” position, something to show that he was more than willing to put money where his mouth was in regard to wanting to help uphold law and order. After graduation, he had ended up catching the eye of a software company CEO who was looking to expand his business into the United States, and especially after a formal interview and demonstration of David’s skills at a self-defense exhibition. The CEO eventually made the decision to have David be the bodyguard to his son, who would be heading the new branch, conveniently located in Recolle proper.
And that was how he became the bodyguard and essentially babysitter of one Lee Yoon-sung.
The reasoning for this was twofold - not only were David’s credentials legitimate enough for the other board members to not bat an eye at (the added fact of him being a Korean-American seemed to also satisfy their wariness), but also it was something of an attempt to have Yoon-sung have someone else in his life to try and make sure he stayed out of trouble, especially after a kidnapping attempt when he was a teenager. Besides the previously-mentioned reasons, Yoon-sung’s father had several other criteria when choosing David for this specific assignment outside physical ability, academic profile and his background as an Army brat; namely someone level-headed enough to not be swayed by potential bribes (from friend and foe alike; the former moreso in attempting to have someone turn a blind eye to his shenanigans) and close to his age in order to keep up with him. Once again, an unintended side effect of this was also that Yoon-sung would have another friend around his age to try and help him through life.
David took the job shortly after graduating college. While he was flattered to take the position at first, he wasn’t exactly thrilled with it either, especially when he started reading over files and being around Yoon-sung for a while, finding out more about the habits of the man that he was supposed to protect. There was even a point when he wondered if this was some sort of joke or metaphorical hazing ritual in the security business. It wasn’t until an incident within the first year that he started to change his tune with regards to how he viewed Yoon-sung: the young heir had actually shown some compassion for some of the other employees that weren’t doing well, taking over their coding positions while they were sick or had family emergencies so they could keep to schedule, and sometimes anonymously donating to them to help with medical costs. Only David knew about it at the time, but it did help him realize that there was more to the prettyboy programmer than originally met the eye.
Not that Yoon-sung would openly admit to it.
AU PERSONALITY:
* Unlike his canon version, David is much more in-tune with his family - writing to them, phone calls, video chat - as Tae-won, he’s not nearly as close to his predecessors despite being somewhat prideful in what he is. He doesn’t feel the need to consult his elders on a lot of things, mostly because he feels they’re too far out of touch and wants to take care of things himself - while David comes to his parents for advice with things relatively often. As a result, he's much more friendly than his canon version; doesn’t assume the worst in humanity due to growing up with a decent support system and not embroiled in near-constant fights.
* On the pride note, David is a hell of a lot more level-headed than his counterpart - unfortunately, pride and hubris is a common flaw in those with draconic blood, and because of David’s upbringing being more close-knit and having something resembling an actual legitimate support system, he is much more willing to go out of his way to help people with unguarded ease than as Tae-won, who assumes the worst of everyone on the outset. Simply put, David is a realist while Tae-won is a pessimist.
* He swears that he survives on “sass and caffeine” when asked on how he copes with some of the ridiculous situations he’s been put in with his job, which makes him incredibly sarcastic as a result, much moreso than his original version, who is much more straitlaced. His temper is much more subdued, isn’t currently pining for anyone and isn’t dealing with nearly as much bullshit.
* David is also much less pragmatic than his counterpart - he does think about the future and the long-term picture, but he doesn’t feel he has to look as far into the future as Tae-won does, mostly due to the fact that he doesn’t have the knowledge of knowing he is going to outlive most regular people. It gives him more of an opportunity to live for the moment and actually enjoy things rather than worry about how something might turn out decades down the road.
* He still is fairly competitive - likes trying to prove himself and takes opportunities to do so, as was part of the reasoning why he stuck with the job of keeping an eye on Yoon-sung despite his original objections until he got to know his charge better. David's also not as much of a loner, but isn’t a complete social butterfly, either - he isn’t completely jaded, so he puts himself out there more, which also helps with networking to do his job.
